Summer is here, and once again the children of Esciton are free of school and wondering why their parents won't let them go on a vacation. The heat can be almost unbearable at times, but at least the sun is always out to provide some healty Vitamin D.

Tap. Tap. Tap.
The soft tapping of fingers against the keys of a laptop became another instrument of the library’s orchestra. The sounds of pages turning, feet dragging against carpet, and jaded sigh created an atmosphere that made Felix feel odd. Normally, the din that surrounded him would have been comforting but as cobalt eyes watched the room, a sense of discomfort began to form; everything seemed perfect here: the librarians were perfectly content as they helped patrons find books, and even the teenagers seemed too bored.
‘This isn’t the time to worry about that,’ he thought to himself as he forced his gaze back to his screen. A yawn emitted from his mouth and Felix quickly saved the document he was working on. Tiredly, he leaned back in his chair and moved his cursor to the beginning of the essay. Twenty two pages on the human need for order in life had drained him of his interest in psychology and as he closed the books that littered the table before him, he thought of his plans for the rest of the day.
Rin had gone out with some of his friends, leaving Felix with a great deal of time on his hands. “Might as well get going,” he muttered under his breath while he put his laptop into his messenger bag. With everything packed and ready to go, he grabbed the books he was done with and began making his way to the aisles. It was then that things went bad; his foot snagged on a cord he hadn’t seen, causing him to fall. “Shit!” he said as his body collided with the ground, sending books on the human mind flying to and fro.

Ash was terribly leery of the Esciton library. Not that he disliked libraries - on the contrary, they were excellent sources of information - but something about this library, in particular, was the slightest bit wrong. It had set him off the moment he had first stepped inside, and his senses had been on high alert ever since he had spotted the surreptitious heat sensor positioned just beyond the library's marble doors. The burly security guard chatting it up with the desk clerk seemed only slightly less suspicious, and the video cameras buried subtly in every other shelf were a dead giveaway of ... something. Ash wasn't sure what.
Another peculiar thing - Ash had been searching for information about poisons which created the same psychological state as dementia did, but there didn't seem to be anything on this subject. Actually, there was nothing pertaining to any kind of poison in the library at all. Not even a simple children's book depicting a witch stirring a potion. It was a bit strange, really.
As he patiently scanned titles in Aisle Four: Psychology, Ash heard quietly approaching footsteps. He tilted his head in the direction of the person coming towards the aisle. A boy. Ash surveyed him suspiciously. Piercing blue eyes, short brown hair, a top-heavy build, and a gait which seemed to indicate that the boy had been hunched over a desk for a long period of time today. Well, that was nothing out of the ordinary. The Esciton schools were known for obscene levels of homework, and this boy could definitely be a student.
The boy stumbled over a cord (probably a loose camera cord, Ash thought derisively) and the pile of books in his arms scattered across the carpeted floor. Ash reflexively bent down to pick up the volume that had slid towards his feet . "Er.. do you need help putting these away?" he asked the boy politely. With a benign, totally unassuming smile, Ash proffered a pale hand to the boy. Ash's standard issue black slacks matched the ones required of library staff, and the rather tight blue polo shirt he wore was close in color to the library's uniform. But for a missing identification badge, Ash might be mistaken for staff. At least, that was what he was hoping for.

There are many things Felix was known for saying throughout his life and as flesh collided with carpet every phrase that he would have every thought of left his mind. He winced, not in pain, but in discomfort as the coarse industrial carpet attacked his face. “…crap…” the male muttered as he began lifting himself up. What did he trip over? Maybe it was a laptop cord? Or maybe it belonged to one of the cameras that blended in with the books so subtly.
His arms instinctively went towards his shirt, wanting to brush off some nonexistent dust and grime. A grimace fell upon his face as his orbs searched the ground looking for the books that had flown from his arms. His line of sight moved from the books and to a pair of legs and then to the face of what seemed to be someone who worked there.
"Er.. do you need help putting these away?"
“Um, yeah thanks. So, what’s it like working here?” Felix asked nonchalantly as his picked up a book to his right. The person opposite him may have been dressed in the staff’s regular attire, but there was something different. His mind searched desperately for some information on what was missing but drew up blank. ‘It doesn’t matter if he works here or not, plus he’s kind of cute. Sorin doesn’t have to know but I think he’s getting worried or something…’“Hey, this might seem a bit weird, but I just finished a really big assignment and I was going to get some coffee, you want to come?" Suddenly, a book on one of the upper shelves became incredibly interesting to him.

“Um, yeah, thanks," said the boy, reaching over for a ratty tome to his right. Ash watched with a critical eye as the boy's broad shoulders and lean, toned arms shifted under the fabric of his shirt. This guy seemed strong - about 150 pounds minimum, and definitely an athlete of some sort. Caution immediately became first and foremost in Ash's brain. He gave the boy a quick visual once-over, checking all the typical areas for weapon concealment. Empty pockets, it appeared, and shoes that would make a hidden knife very obvious. There was no way that the guy carried a damaging, easily accessible weapon. Still, Ash would have to be careful. Guys this size could be extremely powerful if trained in martial arts.
"So, what’s it like working here?” asked the boy as he continued to stack up books. Ash chuckled and bent down to pick up the pile, carefully keeping his left wrist turned away from the boy. "Dull," he said with finality. It would be a bit of a pain if the guy kept trying to talk about Ash's supposed "job." It was just a cover in case of an emergency - Ash had no reason to be at the library beyond checking it as a possible hit point- but best not to let anyone else know that.
Out of the blue, the guy spoke up again. “Hey, this might seem a bit weird, but I just finished a really big assignment and I was going to get some coffee, you want to come?" Ash blinked. Was this college kid for real? Who asked a total stranger out for coffee without even knowing their name? The guy seemed to be weaponless, but maybe he was intelligence or part of a stakeout.
Ash was immediately on the lookout for people who could be in league with the boy. A man with a monocle and a top hat walked by the southern end of the aisle, thoroughly engrossed in a book. Definitely not - far too conspicious. Ash checked his surroundings as covertly as possible. None of the cameras moved abnormally towards either Ash or the boy. Maybe the boy was carrying a bug? Ash glanced at him again. Nothing in his ears, nothing on his face, and if there had been any transmitting devices on his shirt, they would have been disabled by the boy's fall. A little bell went off in Ash’s brain – of course, the fall. No intelligence agent or stakeout operative ever tripped on purpose – it was far too obvious a ploy for information gain. Which meant the boy had tripped by total accident, making him only a college student. Nothing further.
A fifth man walked by the end of the aisle, and Ash realized that he had been silent for at least a full minute. He might as well accept the offer – the library security was going to give him an anxiety attack if he didn't leave soon, and Esciton coffee was actually quite good. His mind made up, Ash grinned at the boy. “Sure,” he said easily. “Got a car, or do we walk?”
